EU INSTITUTIONS AND THE TREATY OF LISBON

Former European Commissioner,David Byrne, has told the National Forum On Europe that the Treaty of Lisbon (EU Reform Treaty) would not affect the balance of power between the institutions of Europe and that “significantly” the interests of smaller Member States “were properly and effectively protected.”

He was addressing a plenary session of the Forum today in the Westin Hotel, Dublin, with fellow-keynote speaker, Susan George, author and Chairof the Board of the Transnational Institute, who is a critic of the Treaty. It was chaired by the Forum’s Chairman, Maurice Hayes, who said that it was clear from the Forum’s series of public information meetings around the country that “people genuinely want to know and understand the institutional arrangements”.
